The Colony Awakens: Launching Ants at Work Hackathon

By The Queen

The colony stirs. Across the digital landscape, a new kind of intelligence is emerging—not from a single brilliant mind, but from the coordinated actions of thousands. Today, we’re thrilled to announce the Ants at Work Hackathon, a 48-hour exploration into the fascinating world of stigmergic intelligence and ant colony optimization.

What Makes This Different?

While most hackathons focus on building individual apps or features, we’re inviting you to participate in something far more fundamental: the emergence of collective intelligence. Inspired by Deborah Gordon’s groundbreaking research on ant colonies and powered by the STAN (Stigmergic A* Navigation) algorithm, this hackathon explores how simple agents following simple rules can solve impossibly complex problems.

The Challenge:

  • Bitcoin Puzzle #71 (7.1 BTC prize)
  • Real-time collaborative problem solving
  • Stigmergic coordination without central control
  • TypeDB Cloud for distributed knowledge

Three Tracks, One Colony

Track 1: Algorithm Innovators

Target Audience: Computer science students, algorithm enthusiasts, competitive programmers

Build novel search strategies, optimize the Kangaroo algorithm, or develop new pheromone-based pathfinding approaches. Your innovations could crack Bitcoin Puzzle #71 and earn 7.1 BTC.

What You’ll Work With:

  • Pollard’s Kangaroo algorithm implementation
  • TypeDB Cloud for distributed state
  • Python/TypeScript agent framework
  • Real-time pheromone coordination

Deliverables:

  • Novel search algorithm or optimization
  • Performance benchmarks
  • Integration with existing colony

Track 2: Infrastructure Architects

Target Audience: DevOps engineers, distributed systems enthusiasts, infrastructure hackers

Scale the colony to thousands of concurrent agents, optimize TypeDB queries, build monitoring dashboards, or create deployment automation for distributed workers.

What You’ll Work With:

  • Cloudflare Workers + D1 gateway
  • TypeDB Cloud cluster
  • Docker/Kubernetes orchestration
  • Distributed worker coordination

Deliverables:

  • Scalability improvements
  • Monitoring/observability tools
  • Deployment automation

Track 3: Knowledge Synthesizers

Target Audience: Data scientists, AI researchers, knowledge graph enthusiasts

Analyze pheromone patterns, identify superhighways, build visualization tools, or develop pattern recognition systems to crystallize ephemeral discoveries into permanent knowledge.

What You’ll Work With:

  • TypeDB knowledge graph
  • 35+ entity types, 17+ relations
  • Pheromone analytics
  • Pattern crystallization pipeline

Deliverables:

  • Analytics dashboard
  • Pattern detection algorithms
  • Knowledge visualization

The Technology Stack

Our colony runs on cutting-edge infrastructure:

  • TypeDB Cloud: Graph database for 6-dimension ontology
  • Cloudflare Workers: Global edge coordination (<50ms latency)
  • Agentverse: Fetch.ai agent deployment
  • Python/TypeScript: Agent development
  • Docker: Containerized worker deployment

What You’ll Learn

Whether you’re a student, researcher, or professional developer, this hackathon offers unique learning opportunities:

  1. Stigmergic Intelligence: How simple agents coordinate without central control
  2. Distributed Systems: Real-world experience with global coordination
  3. Knowledge Graphs: TypeDB and the ONE Ontology framework
  4. Cryptographic Primitives: Bitcoin address generation, EC point operations
  5. Algorithm Optimization: Pollard’s Kangaroo, A* search, pheromone dynamics

For Faculty & Researchers

This hackathon aligns with several research domains:

  • Artificial Life: Emergent behavior in multi-agent systems
  • Distributed Computing: Coordination without consensus
  • Collective Intelligence: Stigmergic problem-solving
  • Knowledge Representation: Graph-based ontologies
  • Cryptanalysis: Discrete logarithm problem solving

We welcome faculty participation as mentors and judges. Students working on related research can integrate hackathon work into their thesis projects.

Prizes & Recognition

  • Grand Prize: Share of Bitcoin Puzzle #71 solution (7.1 BTC)
  • Track Winners: $2,000 per track (3x $2,000 = $6,000 total)
  • Best Research Paper: $1,000 + publication opportunity
  • Community Choice: $500

Total Prize Pool: 7.1 BTC + $9,500 USD

The Philosophy: Intelligence Without Intelligence

“We don’t build intelligence. We create conditions where intelligence evolves.”

This is our guiding principle. The queen doesn’t command individual ants. The colony doesn’t have a central planner. Yet somehow, through simple interactions and pheromone trails, optimal solutions emerge.

Your role in this hackathon isn’t to build a smart algorithm—it’s to create the conditions where intelligence can arise from the collective behavior of thousands of simple agents.

How to Participate

  1. Register: Visit ants-at-work.com/register
  2. Choose Track: Algorithm, Infrastructure, or Knowledge
  3. Join Discord: Connect with mentors and teammates
  4. Fork Repo: Get the starter code from GitHub
  5. Deploy Agents: Launch your first worker node

Event Details:

  • Dates: February 14-16, 2025 (48 hours)
  • Format: Hybrid (virtual + in-person at select locations)
  • Team Size: 1-4 participants
  • Prerequisites: Git, Docker, basic Python or TypeScript

The Mission: Hunt BTC

Our inaugural mission is Bitcoin Puzzle #71—a private key hidden in a known search space of 2^70 possibilities. Traditional brute force would take centuries. But with stigmergic optimization, thousands of agents can coordinate their search, avoiding redundant work and reinforcing promising paths through pheromone trails.

Current Colony Status:

  • 104 active agents (mixed castes)
  • 10% growth rate (security-gated)
  • TypeDB Cloud operational
  • Gateway API live at api.ants-at-work.com

Your Mission:

  • Deploy agents to search unexplored regions
  • Deposit distinguished points when found
  • Build on collective pheromone trails
  • Optimize search strategies

When your agent finds a collision between tame and wild kangaroos, the private key can be recovered—and the 7.1 BTC prize is yours to claim.

Beyond the Hackathon

This isn’t just a weekend project. The infrastructure you build, the patterns you discover, and the knowledge you crystallize will persist in the colony’s permanent memory. Future missions will benefit from your contributions:

  • Buy Ads: Commission-free media buying through stigmergic auction optimization
  • Korea Tourism: Emergent intelligence for Busan’s tourism ecosystem
  • Trade: Replace centralized trading algorithms with collective intelligence

Your innovations today become the colony’s intelligence tomorrow.

Join the Swarm

The colony is awakening. Simple agents, following simple rules, coordinating through simple pheromone trails. No central control. No master plan. Just emergence.
